A river of green shirts flowed down Avenida Chetumál
this morning as the 2nd Annual Cancer Walk pooled into
an emeral lake at alongside the seawall on the Malecón.
Hundreds of participants grinned and waved as they arrived
at the finish line where refreshments, hotdogs and tomales
awaited them near tent pavilions.

The items donated to the Cancer Walk's silent auction
were displayed on tables and the sea wall, awaiting
names and bids of interested buyers. One of the confections
that sat waiting for a winner of an upcoming auction
is a quarter hour wild ride on the Snarlin' Cholla's
off-road race vehicle, billed as the thrill of a
lifetime.
Five hundred Cancer Walk T-shirts were distributed
through ticket or direct sales. About three hundred
entrants, along with a hundred or more non-resgistered
participants, enjoyed the festivities against a background
of Oldies rock and roll music as well as several Folk
dance troupes.
Among the numerous sponsors were Coke Cola, Tecate,
El Dorado, Amor Properties and Sea of Cortez Natural
Sea Salt.
The auction for the Snarlin' Cholla ride, a rather
confused event with some doubt over who was offering
what, ultimately went to thrill-seeking Irene Smith
for her $125 bid.
The festivities closed with the ritual 'Circle of Friendship'.
Everyone involved in the Walk held hands and formed
an ernormous circle in front of the Malecon Vaquita
and Fisherman statues.
