Forest Fire in Juarez Mountains
MEXICALI, Baja California (PH) August 5, 2011
A
forest fire last night was out of control in the Sierra
de Juarez, Mexicali where six houses were damaged by
the fire in less than 24 hours.
Initially, Tecate Fire received a call at 12:45 pm
reporting a forest fire in the area of Rancho Santa
Veronica. Units of the city of Tecate, La Rumorosa y
El Hongo as well as forest fire fighters, went to the
site.
The flames had already consumed several acres of scrub,
chaparral and other vegetation in the area. The wind
quickly spread the fire over the ground as firefighters
tried to create a "firewall", but failed.
Apart from the wind, the fire moved quickly because
it had not rained in the area for some time.
At approximately 8:00pm, the fire had advanced several
miles and was near the medium-security prison at El
Hongo.
By approximately 5:00pm, the wind had caused the smoke
to reach the city of Mexicali.
As of 11:00 pm yesterday the fire was still out of
control.
